Researchers are studying Chamorro and Filipino breast cancer survivors who are invited to join a two-part focus group starting Saturday.
According to a UOG press release, researchers at the University of Guam will conduct a focus group and the answers will be used in research with the University of Hawaii.
Based on information from the study, researchers hope to come up with strategies for a healthy lifestyle among Guam and Hawaiian Chamorro, Native Hawaiians, and Filipino women.
“Evidence suggests that lifestyle interventions that promote healthy weight can reduce the recurrence of breast cancer, and studies show that independent lifestyle factors that promote survival are physical activity and fiber. But these studies are done outside of Guam and Hawaii and include few Asians and Pacific Islands people, “said UOG’s Associate Professor of Nutrition. Tanisha Aflague, a registered nutritionist for nutritionists, said.
Aflague is a researcher in the Guam-based study “Traditional and New Lifestyle Interventions for Breast Cancer Prevention.”
Guam and Hawaiian survivors join focus groups.
