Prostate cancer. High cholesterol. Blood pressure problems. Colon cancer. In the past, these may have been considered a concern only for the older male population. However, new research and new screening techniques highlight the need for men to check in with their doctors on a regular basis to stay healthy.

“Previously, 50 was a magic number for screening for prostate and colon cancer,” said Dr. R. Tyler Hansen, Ph.D., a family doctor at Intermountain Hurricane Valley Clinic. “But depending on your family history, those ages are changing, and in many cases it’s better to be early.”

For some patients, regular blood tests to monitor cholesterol levels are performed on men in their 20s, screening for colorectal cancer before age 45, and prostate cancer depending on the patient’s history. Need to vary in age.
