Men can undergo an annual prostate cancer screening at no cost, thanks to measures supported by state senator Scott Bennett (D-Champaign), who signed the law on Friday.

“Prostate cancer can be life-threatening,” Bennett said. “This new law will give more men access to prostate cancer screening without barriers and ultimately save lives.”

Originally the law House building 5318, private insurance companies should provide an annual prostate cancer screening to all qualified male policyholders, based on the recommendations of a doctor.

Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer in men, and its risk increases with age. The American Urological Association estimates that more than 10,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year.

“A simple test can detect it early and save lives,” Bennett said. “Improving the affordability and accessibility of screening is an important step in improving men’s health.”

The law will come into effect on January 1, 2024.
